where a woman is dead after being hit by a car overnight and now police are searching for that driver. "today in the bay's" marla tellez is the first reporter on the scene of that crash south of downtown just blocks from the municipal baseball stadium. marla, what's happening out there? >> reporter: i can tell you it's still a very active scene that's happened just about five hours ago and plenty of san jose police on scene including sergeant gray conley who joins us live to explain to us what happened. we do understand that a woman was attempting to cross monterey road at bellevue avenue when she was struck and killed about 1:00 this morning. what information do you have to go on? >> we had a couple of witnesses that were out here that witnessed the collision. they said it was a dark colored vehicle, possibly a honda and it has severe front end damage. >> reporter: caused from the impact of hitting the woman? >> correct. >> reporter: so what else can you tell us?

how do you come to an end to this investigation? >> the evidence that we collect up off the street, the statements that we gather and any kind of film footage that we'll get from any cameras on the street here will lead hopefully to a positive end to the investigation. >> reporter: no sign that the driver even attempted to stop? >> that i don't know. >> reporter: as for the woman who passed away? >> right now that's in the coroner's hands on identifying the lady that died. >> reporter: and in terms of traffic for the morning commute here on monterey road, this is a busy thoroughfare no doubt about it. when do you expect to open it? >> hopefully within the next 15 minutes. >> reporter: soon enough. sergeant conley, thank you for your time this morning. >> you're welcome. >> reporter: this investigation getting ready to wrap up on monterey road near bellevue avenue where a woman was struck and killed about 1:00 this morning. police have little to go on. they say that it was a dark colored vehicle that hit her.

she died at the hospital at 1:50 this morning. if you have any information, you are asked to call san jose police. live in san jose, marla tellez, "today in the bay." we have new video this morning of a fire that swept through an elderly care home in walnut creek forcing five people out of their homes. early reports suggest the flames were united on a kitchen stove and spread to nearby cabinets. an elderly woman was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. everyone displaced will be moved to nearby care centers for the time being. new details just released by police in a deadly attack on elderly newspaper vendor in san francisco. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live near the montgomery b.a.r.t. station where that man most recently sold papers. the victim nothing short of a fixture in san francisco who sold papers there for about 30 years. >> reporter: absolutely. good morning to you, jon. hard to believe this actually

happened. this happened about 11:00 in the morning and san francisco police are saying that someone threw dallas ayers to the ground actually. he was taken to the hospital with hip injuries and later died. he sold newspapers in san francisco for at least 30 years including the san francisco chronicle. i just spoke with james miller who is now filling in working the newsstand near the b.a.r.t. station. he tells us he's known ayers all his life. that his dad and ayers were friends. he's upset this morning saying that he was a good and caring man. police are treating this as a homicide. miller tells us he thinks it could possibly be a robbery because his wallet was gone but police are calling it a battery. miller says this is all very hard to take. >> a couple years ago my grandmother passed away and i feel the same efmptiness then a i do now.

an important piece of your life and disappears on you. it really hits you. >> reporter: a customer brought flowers to the stand just this morning. the assailant is described as a white man, full beard, 35 to 40 years old, 5'9", wearing a sweater, blue jeans and black shoes. ayers had been mugged a couple times before and as a result of that he never carried cash with him any way. he says he absolutely loved his job. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." 6:06. a mayday mystery as a search continues for a family lost at sea. the coast guard needs your help identifying the person that made the call for help. >> we are abandoning ship. this is the charm blower. we're abandoning ship. >> the coast guard is still searching for a man, woman and two young children believed to be onboard a 29-foot sailboat 65 miles off the coast of monterey on sunday when they reported the boat was taking on water.

it's been said many times before anything worth having is worth waiting for. i guess we'll find out later tonight if that's truly the case when the san jose city council gets its very first look at a plan to revitalize japantown. the original plan had to be shelved when the economy took a turn for the worst five years ago. bob redell is live with more on why this thing has new life now. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. for many years the city of san

jose has wanted to redevelop this five to six acre site of an eyesore in japantown surrounded by chain link and concreted boarded by 6th, 7th, taylor and jackson street. this site used to be vibrant. it was home to chinatown. in '08 we were here when archaeologist excavated the site for after trtifacts. later today the city could take the first step toward bringing the space back to life when council members decide whether or not to approve basic redevelopment plans for the site and give the go-ahead to continue talks with the developer. that developer would pay the city if they come to an agreement $24 million for this parcel and on it would build six-story apartment buildings housing 600 units and retail space, green space for events

like farmer's market and a new creative center for the arts. >> this is a very special place. this is one of the three surviving japantowns in the state of california. we know we have to get this right and it has to be right and not just for the developer or for the city coffers but it has to be right by the community. >> reporter: the city wanted this to happen years ago. we're talking about 2007, 2008. they seemed to have an agreement back then but that development company pulled out because of the recession. now we're in better times and the city and the developer are both hoping that maybe with a better economy they can get this thing going again. reporting live in japantown in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." san jose earthquakes will officially start construction on their new stadium today. the $60 million project was started in october when the team held this guinness world ground breaking ceremony.

so many people came out there weren't enough shovels to go around. the 18,000-seat stadium is scheduled to be complete in the spring. let there be light as in energy efficient light in san jose more than 2,000 l.e.d. street lights have replaced those amber colored lights that currently dot the landscape. this is a side by side comparison to show you the difference between the old lights and the new ones. you can tell quite a bit of difference there. san jose one of the very first cities nationwide to install these new energy efficient lights. this year the city alone planning to add 500 more of them. the city's ultimate goal is to have 62,000 lights changed over the next decade. >> bright lights. big city there. it's 6:15. here's a quick check of the day's top stories we're following. at least 19 tourists from europe and asia have been killed in a fiery crash on a hot air balloon in egypt. officials say the balloon caught fire mid air and then it just crashed to the ground.

two survivors are now in the hospital. an ohio teenager accused of killing three classmates in a high school cafeteria planning to plead guilty in court today. t.j. lane's plea coming a day before the one-year anniversary of the shooting which happened at shardon high school east of cleveland. two key republicans will meet with president obama at the white house to talk about immigration reform. arizona arizona john mccain and lindsay graham are part of a bipartisan senate group who want to fix the immigration system. and new this morning, we now know what the outgoing pope will be called during retirement. pope benedict xvi will be known as emeritus pope and he'll go by your holiness benedict xvi. the pope made the decision himself. the pope is stepping down officially this thursday. >> cool. you can decide. >> call me your holiness.

whatever he wants, he gets. >> he's the big daddy. hewlett packard ceo meg whitman joined a group of republicans breaking from the party to support gay marriage. >> scott mcgrew says she's been pretty hard to pin down on this issue. >> she's held a number of positions. good morning. as ceo of ebay, she was for benefits to domestic partners, which at the time in the 1990s was progressive. her views moved right when she ran for governor of california as a republican. at that time she supported prop 8, which defined marriage as between a man and woman. she's hoping the supreme court will strike down prop 8. whitman joined a number of republicans in filing a court brief urging the supreme court to strike that prop down. that brief also signed by former president george w. bush and other prominent republicans including former utah governor jon huntsman. yesterday we reported donald trump had written a strange

tweet in support of yahoo! ceo marissa mayer. trump was reacting to news that mayer was ending work from home programs at yahoo! and trump said mayer is right in wanting women to come in and no longer work from home. who knows what they're doing there. he has since deleted that tweet issued a new one changing the word women to yahoo! employees. and finally, space x ready to go back to the international space station video from the previous docking here. elon musk's company conducted one last test. they are looking a lift off on friday morning at 7:10. we'll cover that because it's so cool to watch. >> the arm coming out and connecting. >> totally exciting. >> looking forward to friday. thanks a lot. >> flexing those biceps out here. >> trying to keep up with you

down this morning. that's good news. the winds are really starting to relax. overnight they whipped through the east bay hills. you'll notice a layer of haze today. happy to report even with that haze in our atmosphere, we're still in the good air quality range and that will be the case for tomorrow as well. so we'll hold onto that good air quality even with high pressure driving winds offshore. open up windows and breathe it if you don't suffer from allergies. pollen levels are high. we have breezy conditions every afternoon picking up for the next couple days. 68 degrees in livermore today. 65 degrees in san jose. this is perfection. if you are looking for the 70s, we'll see more tomorrow as temperatures creep up even more so. the low 70s return inland by thursday. mid 70s on the way for friday. it's going to be such a great day for a barbecue, for hitting the beach and game of golf. 65 on sunday. a storm lurking offshore monday. rain and cold on the way for tuesday. get it while you can. let's check that drive.

good morning, mike. >> good morning. the windmill one is hardest one on the course for you. the one where it swings over the hole. over here the bay bridge. that's the hard part right now for east bay commuters into the city. a build past 880. traffic tuesday. we see heavy flow of traffic and east shore freeway speeds are still in upper 50s. we see a lot of company for you, folks. maps are playing it out the same way as sensors show. yellow out of richmond down in toward university avenue. you're okay until you get to berkeley curve and then it slams down. bottom of the screen is the other big issue. the big issue for oakland commuters. north 880 approaching broadway we have three vehicles involved in a crash. there's debris around the lanes and we have maybe three lanes blocked. we can confirm two lanes are blocked. chp has yet to get on scene and a couple other crews. slowing north of the coliseum, all of the way up to the scene

west 580. look at how clear that is. if you get over there, that's your alternate. they have not yet let big rigs go through the area. keep that in mind heading up toward the maze. we're tracking that crash there. meanwhile, we have another incident reported sounds like another crash maybe a fender-bender south 880 passing 238. that's heading down toward hayward where the build is on here and approaching san mateo bridge. no drama there. still waiting on details for that south 880 at 238 crash. look at fremont. as it picks up through this area, just a little bit. right now we're getting a break. biting my tongue. smooth drive toward milpitas and into the south bay. let's get a look at traffic coming into tri-valley with slowing north. southbound through sunol no drama and no surprises. just a build there. northbound routes through the south bay, 101, 887 and 85 starting the build.

a bald eagle out for a joyride is now safely back at home on the peninsula. 24-year-old lives at the palo alto junior coliseum and zoo. her trainer lets her fly free. does it from time to time. last weekend she decided to take off and didn't come back. >> she took off on saturday afternoon midway through the flight. she had half of her dinner. headed north and kept heading north and heading north. >> why? because she's an eagle. she says they were able to track the eagle using a gps

a live look outside at the markets this morning out of new york. it is tuesday, february 26th as we await the opening bell and see how stocks will trade for today. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody. this morning that decision to appoint chuck hagel as successor for secretary of defense still being sorted out as it drags out on capitol hill and nobody wants an answer more than leon panetta. the former defense secretary and santa clara university graduate now working from home in monterey county while that confirmation hearing continues out on capitol hill. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live in washington, d.c. this morning and chuck hagel, a controversial pick for that position but right now the questions are his biggest critics are they ready to move

finally forward on a nomination for that final vote. >> senators john mccain and lindsey graham say they are and they will allow this to come to a floor vote. republicans blocked that almost two weeks ago. now it looks like we may see two votes today. one to let the process move forward and then perhaps a final vote on hagel's nomination despite the pushback he got from his own party from republicans, former colleagues here looks like they are ready to do that. the question is how quickly might that happen. republicans have the option of having 30 hours of debate first and we're still waiting to see whether they will forego that. >> i tell you what, nothing is ever easy on capitol hill and the secretary of defense leon panetta is trying to go into retirement back here home in california and of course expressing how frustrated he is with his holdup here. is he planning, have you heard, to head back to washington for today's confirmation hearing? >> no. from what we hear he'll watch it

i want to show you first and foremost we're nice and clear from the coast through inland cities. it's just a beautiful start to the day. patchy fog out there. not a lot to talk about and your visibility right at the surface is looking good. want to show you statewide temps. this is highly unusual. it only happens when we have offshore flow. inland temperatures, comparable latitudes. 45 degrees in los angeles. 46 in palm springs. now traditionally the clouds keep you much more mild at the coast but offshore flow pushes that clouds back out to sea. as a result you're just as warm this morning in fresno as monterey or cold i should say. 39 degrees in san jose and 36 in livermore. into the east bay, concord right now at 36 degrees. 38 for danville. 38 degrees to start in pleasanton. you need a jacket. something to peel off by 10:00 a.m. with temperatures already in the 60s at 10:00. most of your inland cities. plentiful afternoon sunshine on wa the way for us. more 70s inland and then throughout the end of the week into the first part of the

developing story in egypt where at least 19 foreign tourists are dead after a fire and explosion sends a hot air balloon crashing right to the ground more than 300 miles south of cairo.

that balloon was 1,000 feet up in the air when it suddenly fell to the ground in a sugar cane field. two survivors are now hospitalized. among the 19 killed are tourists from france, britain, china and japan. new this morning, israeli police say a rocket fired into israel from the gaza strip has damaged a road. no one was injured. this is the first time a rocket fired from gaza has landed in israel since fighting along the border last november. also new this morning, nba hall of famer dennis rodman arriving in pyongyang, north korea. he's traveling with three members of the harlem globetrotters. they say footage will be used for a new tv show set to air on hbo in early april. i did a sunday night show with rodman back in chicago during the bull's championships. second only to michael jordan,

we have an update to breaking news in san jose. a woman is dead after being hit by a car overnight. now san jose police are searching for that driver. "today in the bay's" marla tellez is the first reporter on scene of that crash south of downtown near the municipal baseball stadium where the roads have just reopened out there. marla, what are investigators telling you at this hour? >> reporter: the crime scene is no longer. san jose police opening up monterey highway at bellevue avenue just about 6:15. just over a half hour ago. it's been closed for more than five hours up until that point. right over my shoulder is where they say that this woman was struck and killed as she was trying to cross monterey road about 1:00 this morning. they say someone driving a dark colored vehicle possibly a honda hit her. police say a few people witnessed the deadly hit-and-run and say the car took off southbound on monterey with some pretty bad front end damage.

the sergeant handling the investigation says at this point it's too early to tell how fast the car was going though the sergeant assumes the vehicle was traveling about 50 miles per hour. there's not a crosswalk out here either and police say at 1:00 a.m. it's hard to see pedestrians. >> lighting out here, it is dim. at 1:00 in the morning, it's still very hard to see somebody even if they are dressed in bright clothing and following the speed limit it's hard to see somebody and stop in time. >> reporter: now i asked the sergeant about the possibility of drugs or alcohol and he says so far there's no indication of any of that. as for the woman who was killed, she was taken to the hospital where she died about 1:50 this morning. police say they are waiting to notify next of kin before they release her information. again, san jose police are looking for the driver of a dark colored vehicle possibly a honda

of slowing basically the nimitz earning the nasty nimitz nickname this morning. south 880 slammed down as far as speeds go because of that crash around the stevenson boulevard area. motorcycle is down in the lanes and so is the driver. fire truck was on scene basically a paramedic emergency crews just cleared the area and just closed the incident as far as chp is concerned so now we see slowing that you saw bleed down here toward the area. bleed is a bad choice of words. no major injuries reported and a all lanes are cleared. in just ten minutes, we have traffic a steady stream out of union city clamping down when you get to fremont passing off the dumbarton bridge and down toward stevenson. it's tough. fremont may get you through. just stick it out and you can stay on 880 there. also slow 880 south of 238. earlier crash nothing really came of that. sounds like everything is on the

shoulder. hayward into union city also off castro valley y. north 880 at oak. crash cleared. all traffic starting to recover. still very slow around the coliseum. live look shows you how things shape up there as well. it's bogging down around high street high rise. that's the worst of it. tri-valley shows slowing for 580 and 680 south through sunol and now starting to see slowing out of pleasanton and down toward sunol grade and south bay itself northbound routes a problem here but north monterey road cleared after the earlier crime scene. that's your south bay traffic. back to you. new details this morning in a deadly attack on an elderly newspaper vendor in san francisco. "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live near the montgomery b.a.r.t. station where the man most recently sold papers. the victim is really a fixture in san francisco. he sold newspapers there for about 30 years we understand. >> reporter: absolutely. very well known as well liked. where this happened is busy pretty much any time of day.

market at montgomery. police are saying it was around 11:00 in the morning and someone just threw the 77-year-old man to the ground and dropped him to the pavement. he had a hospital stay but now died from his injuries. as you said very well known and well liked newspaper vendor for at least 30 years. dallas ayers sold the chronicle most recently near the montgomery b.a.r.t. station where we just spoke with james miller now working that stand. he says ayers is a longtime family friend. he said that his hip was hurt in that assault but he hurt it a few years ago and thinks it's possible the suspect may have taken his wallet because it is missing. police are just calling this a battery. even after the first hip injury though, he told us that ayers wanteded to g ed ted to get bac because he liked working and liked staying busy. >> he was a sweet man. he helped those around him whoever needed it. he always helped me and i always helped him.

he did lead a quiet life though. >> reporter: this morning a customer dropped off flowers at that newsstand. the suspect is described as a white man with a full beard, 35 to 40 years old standing about 5'9". he was wearing a sweater, blue jeans and black shoes. miller says that ayers had been mugged a couple times in the past and never even carried any cash in his wallet. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." this morning police using a unique move using billboards to track down the prime suspect in a shooting and fiery crash that shut down a las vegas strip. advertising firms donating billboard space across southern nevada to alert the public of a manhunt for 26-year-old ammar harris. the search spreading to the southeast where harris once lived. harris was inside an suv that fired shots at a maserati killing kenneth cherry.

his car spun out of control hitting a taxi cab that burst into flames killing both people inside the taxi. west sacramento police officer is accused of sexually assaulting women while on patrol duty. investigators say sergio alvarez used his position to stop and assault at least six women. alvarez is behind bars in jail on $26.3 million bond. we have new images of an east bay couple who simply vanished in peru. surveillance cameras showed garrett hand and jamie neal at a bus station in lima on january 26th. they went on a bicycling trip back in november but haven't been heard from since january 25th. today a 47-year-old father will be arraigned on murder charges in monterey county. he is accused of causing the death of his 10-month-old daughter whose body was found in a field in castroville a week ago today.

a funeral mass for 10-month-old girl will be held at 11:00 this morning at our lady of refuge church in castroville. a cal swim coach sharing her story of surviving child sex abuse on the oprah winfrey network today. she sued the moraga school district saying they did not enough to stop the abuse. more details about a fire that swept through an elderly care home in walnut creek last night forcing five people out of their homes. those residents are now being cared for at nearby facilities. early reports suggest flames were ignited on a kitchen stove and then spread to nearby cabinets. an elderly woman was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. san jose city council today taking a look at plans to revitalize its japantown. that new plan would add 600 new retail units, thousands of square feet in retail space and an amphitheater.

the developments would be placed on the city's former corporation yard bordered by 6th and 7th street and taylor and jackson. if all goes well, the council could vote on a plan in six eight months. the state of california putting out a new license plate dedicated to the prominent agriculture industry. it features a sunrise over a green field of crops with the words food, fiber, fuel, flora. the new plates will be available next month. new york city mayor michael bloomberg will be the commencement speaker at stanford university this year. the university's president says bloomberg is just a good fit to speak because of his reputation as a businessman, entrepreneur. the university's commencement weekend is set for june 14th through the 16th. >> always interesting to hear. 6:55. more good news about housing.
